YAB Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Mohd Yassin and The Honourable Prime Minister Scott Morrison officially launched the Malaysia-Australia Comprehensive Strategic Partnership (CSP) during the inaugural Malaysia-Australia Annual Leaders’ Meeting, held via video conference on 27 January 2021.
The elevation of the Malaysia-Australia partnership is very significant and historic, representing another milestone in the diplomatic relations between both countries. It reflects a genuine commitment to advancing and consolidating further the already extensive and multi-faceted cooperation bilaterally and at the multilateral level. The launch of Malaysia-Australia CSP is also timely as both countries continue to address the evolving regional and global complexities, including those posed by the COVID-19 pandemic. The CSP will enable the two partners to navigate the new landscape and stay ahead of the curve.
Malaysia and Australia have been long-standing, close partners. The ties between the two countries predate Malaysia’s independence. Australia established its Commission in Kuala Lumpur in 1955, and the then Malaya reciprocated by establishing a Commission in Canberra in 1956. Subsequently in 2015, Putrajaya and Canberra elevated the ties to the Strategic Partnership.
