MALAYSIA’S CANDIDATE ELECTED TO THE

UNITED NATIONS COMMITTEE ON THE RIGHTS OF THE CHILD FOR THE TERM 2027-2031

Malaysia’s candidate, Dato’ Yasmeen Muhamad Shariff, has been elected as a member of the Committee on the Rights of the Child for the term 2027-2031, at the elections held during the 21st Meeting of States Parties to the Convention on the Rights of the Child at the United Nations Headquarters in New York on 23 June 2026.

Dato’ Yasmeen obtained 136 votes of the 189 States Parties present and voting, securing the highest vote count. This marks her second election to the Committee, having previously served as a member for the term 2013-2017.

This election reflects the confidence and trust of the international community in her expertise and dedication to advancing the rights and well-being of children. It is also a recognition of Malaysia’s continuous efforts to advance the rights of children through inclusive policies, legislative reforms and programmes aimed at ensuring that every child is afforded opportunities to realise their full potential.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs commends the Ministry of Women, Family and Community Development for its close collaboration and dedicated efforts in supporting Malaysia’s candidature, which culminated in the successful election of Dato’ Yasmeen to the Committee.

As a member of the Committee, Dato’ Yasmeen will serve in her personal capacity as an independent expert. She will contribute to the Committee’s mandate in monitoring the implementation of the Convention, engaging in constructive dialogue with States Parties, and promoting a rights-based approach to issues affecting children globally.

Malaysia remains firmly committed to promoting and protecting the rights of children in line with the principles and provisions of the Convention. Malaysia will continue to work constructively with all stakeholders to address emerging challenges affecting children.

In today’s increasingly complex global landscape, the work of the Committee remains vital in upholding the rights, dignity and future of all children. Malaysia looks forward to Dato’ Yasmeen’s valuable contribution to the work of the Committee and to the broader international effort to ensure that no child is left behind.
