Malaysian High Commission Showcases Malaysian Cuisines And Culture, 24 September 2017, Nairobi, Kenya
The High Commission of Malaysia in Nairobi, Kenya joined three other ASEAN Missions in Kenya – Indonesia, Philippines and Thailand to jointly organise the Second ASEAN-Nairobi Festival at the Hub Mall-Karen, second largest shopping centre in Kenya, located about 20km from the city centre.
Indonesia as the chairperson of this year’s ASEAN-Nairobi Committee is the host of the festival. Malaysia will host the festival next year.
Officiated by Ambassador Christopher Chika, Director of Asia and Australasia Ministry of Foreign Affairs Kenya, the event was also attended by the heads of mission of the four ASEAN countries and about 1300 attendees from other diplomatic missions, businesses, ministries and members of the general public. High Commissioner-designate of Malaysia to Kenya Mr. Loh Seck Tiong who arrived in Nairobi less than six days ago to assume the new appointment, led Malaysia’s participation at the festival.
The festival which began from 12.30 pm to 4.00 pm was filled with various cultural performance by the four ASEAN missions. The High Commission of Malaysia put up a fashion show (Baju Batik and Cheongsam, Baju Melayu and Baju Kurung) Taichi and Teh Tarik demonstrations to the delight of the crowd.
The Malaysian High Commission also put up a booth to sell an array of popular Malaysian cuisines such as nasi lemak, mee goreng, meehun goreng, karipap, kuih ketayap, kuih bom, kuih chang and teh tarik. Proceeds of the sales will be donated to the charity. The cuisines were prepared by the Perwakilan Ladies of Nairobi.
The High Commissioner-designate said the event offered the attendees not only the opportunity to taste Malaysian popular cuisines but also to discover places of interests in Malaysia through tourism brochures that were displayed at the Malaysian booth.
He said, overall many of those who attended were very delighted and happy and wished that more of such activities would be promoted to the public and expatriates in Nairobi on ASEAN members’ identity, food and culture.
Loh also highlighted the importance of the Malaysian High Commission’s role in enhancing bilateral relations with Kenya and hoped the effort in organising such event would further enhance people-to-people relations.
