The Malay Language Class for Beginners? was a continuation of the same project carried out by the High Commission in 2003 as part of the High Commission's role to help the Sri Lankan Malays in the acquisition of basic knowledge (pronunciation, simple grammatical structures, spelling, training in written and oral comprehension) in the language of its origin. Lecturers included language teachers from Sri Lanka Malay Confederation and also officials from the High Commission. Syllabuses of the course were the Institute of Language and Literature Malaysia or Dewan Bahasa dan Pustaka Malaysia (DBP) standards. Most of the course materials used for the course was courtesy from the DBP.
Fourteen participants from various Malay clubs and associations in Sri Lanka have successfully completed the course. His Excellency Rosli Ismail, High Commissioner of Malaysia presented certificates to all the successful participants and also awards for the overall best participant and best participant for attendance.
The objectives of the course were successfully met as participants were able to express themselves in the basic Malay language in common situations; gained a grasp of the spoken tongue and the basic mechanisms of the written and oral Malay language for communicating in day-to-day situations; improved the participants? oral and written use of the Malay language and understand basic knowledge of Malaysia?s history and culture.
