In conjunction with the celebration of the 54th Anniversary of the National Day of Malaysia, an official Reception was hosted by H.E. Amb. Azmi Zainuddin, High Commissioner-designate of Malaysia to the Democratic Socialist Republic of Sri Lanka, on 29 September 2011 at the Hilton Colombo.
The Reception was attended by approximately 250 guests, which consisted Ministers, members of the diplomatic corps, senior government officials, business community, media representatives and the Malaysian community residing in Sri Lanka. The Sri Lankan Government was represented by the Honourable Dayasritha Tissera, Minister of State Resources and Enterprise Development of Sri Lanka, who was the Minister in attendance and Chief Guest of the event.
Prominent dignitaries who were present include Hon. A.H.M. Fowzie, Senior Minister of Urban Affairs, Hon. Athauda Seneviratne, Senior Minister of Rural Affairs, Hon. Nimal Siripala De Silva, Minister of Irrigation and Water Resources, Hon. Johnston Fernando, Minister of Cooperatives and Internal Trade and H.E. Karunatilaka Amunugama, Secretary to the Ministry of External Affairs.
A simple ceremony was held to mark the occasion during which H.E. High Commissioner delivered a welcoming speech while the Hon. Minister delivered a reciprocal speech on the behalf of the Government of Sri Lanka. The two VIPs proposed toasts to the Heads of State of the two countries before ending the observance of the formalities with a cake cutting ceremony.
The guests were also served with a good mix of Malaysian favourite cuisines prepared by the hotel such as satay, nasi goreng and fried ‘mee hoon’ and other local delicacies.
