485th ANNIVERSARY OF CITY OF OAXACA

From 24th to 26th April, Madame Amelia Azhar and the Ambassador together with 10 other Ambassadors and their respective spouses were the guests-of-honour of the City of Oaxaca as it celebrated its 485th Anniversary.  The Ambassadors from Bangladesh, Belgium, Egypt, European Union, Georgia, Indonesia, India, Kazakhstan, South Korea and Vietnam as well as Malaysia were given a special plague of recognition as a Distinguished Visitor of Oaxaca by Lic. C. Jose Antonio Hernandez Fraguas, Mayor of Oaxaca in a Solemn Ceremony at Casa Oaxaca.  Lic. Alejandro Ismael Plurat Hinojosa, Governor of the State of Oaxaca and City Councillors were also present during the ceremony.  It was preceded by a Oaxacan Food Festival at the Municipal Building where the local Oaxacan fool and folklores were served and performed to the delight of the audience.

Oaxaca is a state in southern Mexico known for its indigenous cultures. Its capital city of the same name is noted for colonial buildings often made of green volcanic stone. In the main square, El Zócalo, stands the baroque Catedral de Oaxaca. Beyond the city, pre-Columbian archaeological sites include Mitla, Yagul and Monte Albán, the Zapotec capital dating to around 500 B.C.
