The Embassy of Malaysia in Mexico City hosted a reception to celebrate the 56th National Day at the Chancery on 10 October 2013.  It was attended by approximately 200 guests from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Mexico, ambassadors and representatives from embassies accredited to Mexico, business people and Malaysians who are living in Mexico.

In the speech, H.E. Dato’ Jamaiyah M. Yusof, Ambassador of Malaysia to Mexico, offered her condolences and heartfelt sympathy to the people of Mexico who were adversely affected by the natural disasters brought by the storms ‘Ingrid’ and ‘Manuel’ recently.  She also shared how Malaysia transformed into a diversified and relatively prosperous nation with manufacturing and services sector contributing 80% of the economic growth.

The speech also touched on the strong bilateral relationship between Malaysia and Mexico which saw the total bilateral trade between the two countries in 2012 amounted to USD1.76 billion.  She also informed the audience that Volkswagen Mexico has started sending their experts to Malaysia to assist in setting up the Malaysian Volkswagen plant.  The bilateral trade relationship will progress further with the negotiations on the Trans Pacific Partnership (TPP) with all members including Mexico.

Dato’ Jamaiyah also announced that the Mexico-Malaysia Friendship Group of the Mexican Chamber of Deputies of the LXII Legislature was installed on 19 September 2013.

The guests were served with some Malaysian dishes including ‘satay’ to give them a taste of Malaysian culinary delights.  The Chancery was also decorated with ‘bunga manggar’ and other decorative items such as the ‘wau’ and the ‘baju songket’ from Terengganu.  The students from the cultural troupe of the University of Ixtlahuaca performed several traditional Malaysian dances during the reception.
