 TYT Ambassador Muzafar Shah Mustafa led the Embassy of Malaysia’s delegation (including from MATRADE office in Mexico City) in participating in the ASEAN Economic Roadshow in Guadalajara, Jalisco from 11 to 12 April 2019. Other Heads of Mission from Indonesia, Thailand and Vietnam also participated in the event while Philippine Embassy was represented by its First Secretary.

The visit to one of 32 Mexican State has been an annual event of  the ASEAN Committee in Mexico (ACMC)  with the objectives to:

  • Promote greater interaction between ASEAN Missions and State officials with a view to enhance collaboration at all levels;
  • Seek potential economic collaboration with different Mexican States;
  • Enhance ASEAN awareness among the general public in Mexico with a view to strengthen and diversify the relations at different areas including cultural and tourism.

During the two-day event, the ASEAN delegation participated in the programs, as follows:

  • Forum on ASEAN hosted by COMCE for Western Region;
  • Call on the Governor of Jalisco;
  • Dinner hosted by Mayor of Guadalajara;
  • Lunch hosted by Mayor of Zapopan;
  • Visit to Creative Digital City;
  • Business-to-Business Meeting (B2B) session with local companies.

TYT Ambassador also took the opportunity during the visit to meet with the Malaysian Honorary Consul in Guadalajara.

In summary, the visit has been well received by the State Government and business community in Guadalajara. The visit has not only created greater awareness of ASEAN as a regional organization in general, but also in promoting business and trade opportunities between the state and Southeast Asian region and individual countries. While no specific figures in terms of potential business could be generated during the visit, nevertheless through various interactions such as the B2B session, direct and indirect enquiries on doing business with Malaysia had been raised which potentially could result in real business dealings with Malaysian companies.

Apart from that, the visit has also provided excellent opportunities to engage with various parties in the state of Jalisco especially in Guadalajara; State government officials and business community alike.

In summary, the participation of the Malaysian Embassy headed by TYT Ambassador Muzafar Shah Mustafa reflects Malaysia’s continued commitment towards ACMC and its activities in Mexico. Malaysia is schedule to assume ACMC chairmanship for six months in the first half of 2020.
