ASEAN SEMINAR - MATIAS ROMERO INSTITUTE
On 23 February, the five Mexico City-based ASEAN Ambassadors participated in the first-ever ASEAN Seminar organized by Mexico’s premier diplomatic institute – Instituto Matias Romero (IMR). The main purpose was to share knowledge and experiences on ASEAN with the 34 aspiring young Mexican diplomats. Moderated by Dr. Natalia Saltalamacchia, Director General of IMR, the Ambassadors of Indonesia, Malaysia, Philippines, Thailand and Vietnam respectively delivered a talk on the following subjects:
- What is ASEAN and the Socio-Cultural Community (Indonesia)
- The importance of ASEAN for Malaysia and the Political Security (Malaysia)
- The importance of ASEAN for Viet Nam and the Economic Community (Viet Nam)
- ASEAN Economic Community (Thailand)
- The Philippines Chairmanship of ASEAN in 2017 (Philippines)
During the interval, a photo exhibition of places of interest of the participating ASEAN countries was held at the foyer of IMR as well as a reception with finger food of each country served. This was followed by a briefing on the state of bilateral relations between each country with Mexico by the embassy’s political functionaries. Feedbacks during the Question & Answer Session were encouraging as the participants were enthusiastic and able to learn first-hand from the respective ASEAN Embassies about the socio-culture, economy, politics as well as having an intellectual discourse with the ASEAN diplomats based in Mexico City.
