In celebrating the 50th Anniversary of ASEAN, the five ASEAN embassies in Mexico City, namely Indonesia, Malaysia, Philippines, Thailand and Vietnam held an ASEAN Cultural Week at Mexico`s Chamber of Deputies from 12th to 14th September 2017. With an average of more than 200 audience per day, the 3-day event attracted members of parliament, government officials and university students. The event was a success as ASEAN was made more visible in Mexico particularly in Mexico’s Parliament better known as the House of Mexican People.
On the first day, the event started with the Opening Ceremony officiated by the Hon. Federal Deputy Mr. Victor Giorgana, President of the Commission on Foreign Affairs, Chamber of Deputies with his welcome remarks. This was followed by remarks from HE Mohammad Azhar Mazlan, Ambassador of Malaysia in his capacity as the Chairman of ASEAN Committee in Mexico City. In his remarks, the ambassador emphasized the partnership and potentials ASEAN-Mexico had in all spheres and underscored the close ties between ASEAN-Mexico. The five ambassadors then made individual presentation on ASEAN’s evolution and future outlook, followed by a kaleidoscopic of ASEAN cultural performances. The program continued with a reception of ASEAN finger food galore; the inauguration of ASEAN photo gallery showcasing places of interest; and ended with Malaysia’s presentation on “Malaysia’s Cultural Environment” by Mr. Khornelisman Jasry, First Secretary. In the following two days, the other four embassies made individual presentation on gastronomy, martial arts, dancing classes and talks on culture and bilateral ties with Mexico.
