On 9 July 2019, YBhg. Dato´ Sri Muhammad Shahrul Ikram Yaakob, Secretary General of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Malaysia led the Malaysian delegation in co-chairing the Bilateral Consultations Between Malaysia and Mexico that was held at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Mexico (SRE), Mexico City. TYT Ambassador Muzafar Shah Mustafa and other officers from the Embassy, MATRADE office in Mexico City and the officer from Desk Amerikas, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Malaysia also attended the Meeting. This is the first Bilateral Consultations Meeting that was held since the establishment of diplomatic relations between Malaysia and Mexico.
During the Meeting, YBhg. Dato´ Sri KSU met with his counterpart, His Excellency Ambassador Julian Ventura Valero, Deputy Secretary of Foreign Affairs, Secretariat of Foreign Relations of Mexico to discuss several issues ranging from political dialogue, economic relations, mutual cooperation, agriculture issues, consular affairs as well as multilateral affairs that would benefit both countries.
The session was then extended to a working lunch where several issues of regional cooperation such as the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC), ASEAN and Pacific Alliance were discussed. Apart from that, the two sides were also discussing on candidatures of Malaysia and Mexico in the United Nations for possible reciprocal arrangements in the future.
The Malaysian delegation also had the opportunity to visit the Senate of the Republic and met with the members of the Committee of Foreign Relations Asia – Pacific – Africa to discuss on strengthening the bilateral relations between the two countries. The meeting was co-chaired by YBhg. Dato´ Sri KSU and Senator Ernesto Perez Astorga, the Secretary for the Foreign Affairs Foreign Relations Asia – Pacific – Africa Commission.
The visit by YBhg. Dato´ Sri KSU to Mexico City has been successful in strengthening bilateral relations of both countries where outstanding issues and the framework of future collaboration were laid out.
