On 21 March 2018, Mr. Khornelisman Jasri, First Secretary attended a multilateral meeting among Head of Missions and representatives of The Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for Trans-Pacific Partnership (CPTPP) organized by the Senate of Mexico.
It was attended by nine (9) countries´ HOMs and representatives namely Australia, Canada, Chile, Japan, Malaysia, Mexico, New Zealand, Peru, and Viet Nam. Brunei Darussalam and Singapore were not represented.
The closed meeting inter alia addressed Mexico´s textile and footwear industry concerned over possible dumping by Vietnam and Malaysia and therefore the Mexican government wishes to create mechanisms of protection.
Unlike Malaysia, where the Cabinet had endorsed for Malaysia to join the CPTPP on 21 February 2018 and instructed the relevant agencies to expedite the amendments to the relevant legislation, as for the Mexican side, currently the text of the CPTPP is being revised by the Legal Department of the Secretariat of Foreign Affairs prior to tabling it at the Senate. The single-term Senate would end its term on 31 April 2018 before the new team would be elected on 1 July 2018. Should the ratification could not be concluded by the end of April 2018, it would be “back to square one” with the new Senators. And a new President would also be inaugurated in December 2018.
