NATIONAL SPORTS DAY 2016

MEXICO CITY

In conjunction with Malaysia`s National Sports Day 2016, the Malaysian Embassy in Mexico City organized a sporting event on Sunday, 9 October 2016 taking advantage of the gazetted weekly sports day held every Sundays in Mexico City. Every Sunday, a total of 30 km of city road are closed from 0600 hours to 1400 hours for motor vehicles as the city dwellers enjoy non-motorised sport activities such as jogging, cycling, rollerblading and aerobics. On a normal Sunday, nearly ten thousand people participate in this weekly leisure activities and this number could reach to more than seventy thousand people during special events.

H.E. Ambassador Mohammad Azhar Mazlan and Madame Amelia Azhar led 40 Malaysians and the embassy staff in sports activities, among others, brisk walking, jogging, running, cycling and rollerblading for 5 km. Also present, were the Ambassador of Algeria and Ambassador of the Philippines as well as colleagues from the embassies of ASEAN countries in Mexico City namely Indonesia, Thailand and Vietnam as well as representatives from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Mexico.

The sports activities started at 0930 hours at the Auditorio Nacional and intermitted at El Ángel de la Independencia about an hour later. At El Ángel de la Independencia, the Malaysian contingent joined the locals for aerobic session. The presence of the `Malaysian contingent` among thousands of Mexicans had attracted local interest towards Malaysia. Embassy staff also distributed copies of Visit Malaysia pamphlets during the sports day. Those participated in the event gave positive feedbacks as they were delighted to have had the opportunity to interact with one another in an informal and friendly setting.
