PRESS RELEASE EARTHQUAKE IN CHIAPAS, MEXICO

On 7th September 2017 at 2349 hours, an 8.2 richter scale earthquake struck off the coast of the State of Chiapas, 750 km southeast of Mexico City.  The epicentre was 133 km southwest of Pijijiapan, Chiapas at a depth of 58 km.  In the aftermath, to date ninety one (91) people have lost their lives. 

 

Following the calamity, HE Lic. Enrique Pena Nieto, President of Mexico has declared a 3-day national mourning and instructed the federal and state agencies to assist in the relief efforts for those affected.  The Embassy has been in contact with all Malaysians residing in Mexico.  They were all accounted for and in safe condition.  None are living in or nearby the affected areas.

 

As there have been 928 reported aftershocks all over Mexico, the Embassy is closely monitoring the situation and in contact with the local authorities.  Malaysians have been advised to call the Embassy for an update.  The Embassy’s lines of communication are open and could be contacted at the following details:
