THE 50^TH ANNIVERSARY OF THE TREATY OF TLATELOLCO

On 14 February, the 50^th Anniversary of the Treaty for the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons in Latin America and the Caribbean or better known as the Treaty of Tlatelolco was commemorated at the 25^th Session of General Conference of the Agency for the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons in Latin America and the Caribbean (OPANAL) at the Ministry of External Relations, Mexico.  The Treaty legally established that Latin America and the Caribbean and adjacent marine areas would remain free of nuclear weapons. 

H.E. Lic. Enrique Pena Nieto, President of Mexico officiated the event in the presence of H.E. Dr. Luis Videgarary Caso, Secretary of External Relations, Mexico and all 33 member-state of OPANAL and observers including H.E. Perfecto R. Yasay, Secretary of Foreign Affairs of the Philippines.  Present also were members of the diplomatic corps including H.E. Mohammad Azhar Mazlan, Ambassador of Malaysia to Mexico.

In his statement at the Conference, H.E. Yasay speaking as Chairman of ASEAN iterated the importance of the Treaty of Tlatelolco as well as the Southeast Asia Nuclear-Weapon Free Zone (SEANWFZ) in the context of preserving the global peace and security free from nuclear weapons and all other weapons of mass destruction.
