In conjunction with the celebration of Malaysia’s 68th National Day and 62nd Malaysia Day, His Excellency Dato’ Mohamad Azhar Mazlan, High Commissioner of Malaysia to Pakistan, undertook an official visit to Karachi. A central feature of this visit was his keynote address at the English Speaking Union of Pakistan (ESUP), organised by the Consulate General. ESUP, established in 1961 and affiliated with the London-based English-Speaking Union, has long positioned itself as a platform for dialogue and intellectual exchange. Its membership includes industrialists, philanthropists, academics and thought leaders, thus making it an ideal vehicle for Malaysia’s engagement with Pakistan’s civil society elite.

This engagement was significant in both symbolic and substantive terms. Symbolically, it reaffirmed Malaysia’s deep-rooted ties with Pakistan since 1957, when Pakistan was among the earliest countries to recognise Malaysia’s independence. His Excellency also recalled the contribution of Justice Abdul Hamid of Pakistan in the drafting of Malaysia’s Constitution. Such references were carefully chosen to remind the audience that Malaysia–Pakistan relations are not merely transactional but are built upon common Islamic culture, mutual respect and shared historical experiences. This historical depth provides the foundation for the Strategic Partnership established on 22 March 2019.

Substantively, His Excellency outlined a forward-looking vision that connected people-to-people ties, trade, education and investment with the overarching framework of the Malaysia–Pakistan Strategic Partnership. The speech demonstrated how this Partnership seeks to transform cultural affinities into structured cooperation across political, economic and socio-cultural domains.
