Islamabad Serena Hotel, in collaboration with the Malaysian High Commission, proudly hosted "Journey to Malaysia: Exploring Diverse Flavors and Culinary Traditions of Southeast Asia," a six-day celebration of Malaysian cuisine and culture. This vibrant event took place at Zamana Restaurant from September 4 to September 9, 2024, attracting over 1,000 attendees throughout its duration.
The festival was officially inaugurated on September 4 by His Excellency Ambassador Dato’ Azhar Mazlan, High Commissioner of Malaysia to Pakistan, alongside General Manager of Islamabad Serena Hotel, Mr. Peter Martin.
Guests indulged in authentic Malaysian dishes such as Nasi Lemak, Roti Canai, and Teh Tarik, offering a true taste of Southeast Asia’s culinary diversity. Complementing this gastronomic experience were captivating traditional Melayu daily dance performances, with artists showcasing dances from various Malaysian states, bringing the country’s rich cultural heritage to life.
Ambassador Dato’ Azhar Mazlan shared his thoughts on this special occasion: “Today, we are not merely sharing our food; we are sharing our stories, our traditions, and a piece of Malaysia’s heart with our friends in Pakistan. This festival is a celebration of our shared heritage and the bonds that unite us as neighbours in this vibrant region of Asia. Malaysia is a melting pot of cultures, and our cuisine is a testament to this diversity, blending influences from Malay, Chinese, Indian, and indigenous traditions. Through events like 'Journey to Malaysia,' we aim to deepen the understanding and appreciation of our rich cultural heritage.”
In his remarks, Mr. Peter Martin expressed his gratitude to the Malaysian High Commission for this cultural collaboration, emphasizing how events like these strengthen the longstanding ties between Pakistan and Malaysia, which have flourished for 77 years.
Zamana Restaurant was transformed into a Malaysian wonderland, where attendees were transported into the heart of Malaysia, immersing themselves in its vibrant culture and culinary traditions. This celebration also supported Malaysia's ongoing efforts to register its Malaysian Breakfast Culture on UNESCO's Intangible Cultural Heritage list.
In addition to fostering cultural and diplomatic relations, this event was also part of the Program Mendampingi Rakyat Malaysia (PMRM), an initiative aimed at gathering the Malaysian diaspora in Islamabad and offering them a taste of home. The event successfully brought together Malaysians residing in Pakistan, allowing them to reconnect with their roots while sharing Malaysia’s culinary treasures.
The successful event marked another milestone in fostering cultural and diplomatic relations between Malaysia and Pakistan, as well as strengthening ties within the Malaysian community abroad.
