AMBASSADOR’S MESSAGE
IN CONJUNCTION WITH MALAYSIA’S 53RD NATIONAL DAY
On this significant and auspicious day, Malaysians everywhere celebrate Hari Merdeka to commemorate the birth of Malaysia fifty-three years ago. In this regard, on the occasion of the 53rd Anniversary of the National Day of Malaysia, it is with great honour and satisfaction that I extend our heartiest felicitations to our Filipino friends and fellow Malaysians in the Republic of the Philippines.
This year, the theme chosen for Malaysia’s National Day is “1Malaysia: Transforming the Nation”. This theme reflects the 1Malaysia Concept of the Honourable Dato’ Sri Mohd Najib Tun Abdul Razak, Prime Minister of Malaysia, in bringing the nation towards greater unity and success under one banner regardless of religion, race and creed. The “1Malaysia: Transforming the Nation” celebration will focus on the Malaysian people’s prosperity under the 1Malaysia Concept. Essential also to the 1Malaysia Concept is the recognition that accountability and transparency are important ingredients for good governance. The increased emphasis on performance and delivery to the people will support further liberalization of the Malaysian economy and inclusive economic opportunity.
Since Malaysia’s independence on 31st August 1957, Malaysia has continued to move forward with purpose, remain strong and stand united as a nation in the face of domestic adversity and global challenges. Throughout the years, Malaysia has succeeded in many achievements – national and regional development, foreign relations, economic growth and social development. While development has been phenomenal, the country has not compromised its history and heritage although it developed modern infrastructure and industries rapidly. Many notable landmarks, engineering marvels and architecture wonders have sprung up throughout Malaysia, such as the PETRONAS Twin Towers, the KL Tower and the Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA). Malaysia is confident that it can achieve fully developed national status by 2020.
Malaysia is a unique country, blessed with various races and religions living together in peace and harmony. The Malaysian people, be it Malay, Chinese, Indian, Iban, Kadazan-Dusun, Nyonya or Bajau, have dedicated themselves to understanding, mutual respect, community involvement and working together to create a better future for generations of Malaysians to come.
Malaysia is also a land of fascinating sights and attractions. Rich in colour and contrasts, its multi-faceted charms seldom fail to awe visitors. It is a paradise of sun-drenched beaches, enchanting islands, diverse flora and fauna, forest retreats and magnificent mountains. Many visitors are also attracted to Malaysia for its shopping, good convention facilities and adventure.
I am happy to note that there is a sizable Malaysian community in the Philippines. I am proud to say that they have carried the name of Malaysia exemplarily and have built an honest and hardworking reputation for themselves over the years in this country. Indeed, it is important to uphold the good name of Malaysia abroad and I am glad that the Malaysian community here has been doing so with success.
In terms of bilateral relations between Malaysia and the Philippines, we have enjoyed good relations although there remain enormous untapped potential for cooperation between both countries in myriad areas such as trade, investment, tourism, education, finance, defence, social development, infrastructure development, agriculture and other vital sectors. Bilateral relations have also been on the rise as demonstrated by the exchanges of visits and initiatives at various official and personal levels. The people to people relations between Malaysians and Filipinos are always warm and good. I am confident that in the years ahead, Malaysia under the leadership of The Honourable Prime Minister Dato’ Sri Mohd Najib Tun Abdul Razak; and the Philippines under His Excellency President Benigno S. Aquino III will further guide these close relations to new and greater heights.
On the international front, Malaysia has played an active and engaging role in brokering peace and fostering understanding across the globe; provide humanitarian assistance for the unfortunate; and have been working closely together with other member states in ensuring the continuous development of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN). As founding members of ASEAN, Malaysia and the Philippines share the same vision and ideals in strengthening regional cooperation in the years ahead.
On a personal note, I would also like to extend my appreciation to the Filipino people for their warm welcome and hospitality since I assumed my Ambassadorship to this country in July this year.
Lastly and once again, on behalf of the Malaysian people I wish to offer my warmest greetings to His Excellency Benigno S. Aquino III, President of the Republic of the Philippines and the Filipino people. May the Philippines continue to enjoy peace and prosperity in the years ahead. I would also like to express my strong confidence that bilateral cooperation between Malaysia and the Philippines will continue to grow from strength to strength. Indeed, the future looks bright for Malaysia-Philippines relations, and we should strive ahead!
With that, I wish my fellow Malaysians, Merdeka!
And to the Filipino people, Mabuhay and Maraming salamat!
