COURTESY CALL ON AMBASSADOR DR. KARIN BOVEN AMBASSADOR OF THE KINGDOM OF THE NETHERLANDS TO SUDAN, 16 OCTOBER 2018
The Malaysian Ambassador-designate to the Republic of the Sudan, Mohamad Razdan Jamil called on Ambassador Dr. Karin Boven, Ambassador of the Netherlands at the Embassy of the Kingdom of the Netherlands on 16 October 2018. He was accompanied by Mr Istaq Nadzril Abd Kader, Counsellor of the Embassy of Malaysia. After exchanging pleasantries, both Ambassadors spoke about their respective experiences in the diplomatic corp as well as developments in Sudan.
During the call, Ambassador-designate raised the issue of the Al-Manara Water Company (AMWC), the first public-private partnership (PPP) project to take off in Sudan which has many positive take-aways for Sudan. Another unique attribute of the project is that it involves funding from the Netherlands, South Africa and Malaysia.
For our reader’s information, the AMWC directly filters water from the Nile River and this supply is abundant throughout the year when compared to taking supply from groundwater which is finite. In the long run, building such facilities will bring huge dividends and benefit not only to the government but to the people as well. Groundwater when used leaves empty spaces which can lead to soil erosion and sinkholes to appear.
