Malaysia - Sudan to strengthen relations

KUALA LUMPUR, March 13 (Bernama) -- Malaysia and Sudan agreed to strengthen ties especially in education and trade, Deputy Foreign Minister A. Kohilan Pillay said.

He said the Malaysian government would encourage local companies to grab opportunities offered by the Sudanese government.

"Our bilateral trade is on a positive trend although the volume is not very huge.

"But there are ways and means to increase the volume," he told reporters after attending the 2nd Conference of Sudanese Ambassadors Accredited to Asian Region here on Friday.

He hoped that the relations, which started since 1991 during Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad's leadership, could be further strengthened through exchange of visits.

Meanwhile, Sudan's Deputy Foreign Minister Ali Ahmad Karti said Sudan was keen to cooperate with Malaysia in various fields.

"Sudan is a big country with so many resources while Malaysia has the technology," he said.
