AMBASSADOR CHUAH MEETS DEPUTY GOVERNOR OF ODESSA OBLAST
During the Working Visit to Odessa on 2 March 2012, H.E. Mr. Chuah Teong Ban, Ambassador of Malaysia to Ukraine had a discussion with Mr. Peter V. Khlytsov, Deputy Governor of Odessa Oblast (province) at the latter’s office.
The discussion was focused on promoting and strengthening closer bilateral cooperation that exists between Malaysia and Ukraine. The Deputy Governor expressed the desire to see Odessa playing an active role to promote the bilateral relations and further suggested the proposal to forge a relationship between Odessa Oblast and Melaka through the establishment of a “Joint Commission between Odessa Oblast and Melaka” under the framework of a proposed Social Cultural, Scientific and Technical Cooperation Agreement. Ambassador Chuah took note of the proposal and looked forward to receiving a concrete working paper from the oblast for onwards transmission to Melaka authorities for consideration.
Both sides agreed that bilateral trade has not reached its potentials. More efforts, including trade promotion missions, needed to be taken to boost the trade volume. As a first step, both sides will encourage importers and exporters to use Odessa Port as a gateway for Malaysian products to Ukraine and CIS market. Likewise, all exportations to Malaysia from Ukraine should be channelled through this historic port city.
