On 27 October 2018, the Embassy of Malaysia participated in the fifth OUTLOOK World Cultural Festival in Kyiv. With the theme Batik, different items made from the Malaysian Batik such as sarong and cushion cover took centre stage at Malaysia’s booth. Traditional woven-textiles such as the songket and pua kumbu as well as the Kebaya Nyonya were also displayed. Meanwhile, models wearing the Malaysian traditional clothes including Baju Melayu, Baju Kurung, Long Sleeve Batik and Batik Cardigan thrilled the audience during the fashion show.
But the highlights of the Embassy’s booth were the demonstration of Teh Tarik by H.E. Ambassador Dato’ Raja Reza Raja Zaib Shah and batik painting by Datin Roslina Ismail. H.E. Ambassador gave the patrons of the festival a show of his skills in “pulling tea” – dragging a stream of tea back and forth repeatedly between two vessels – delighting them with the novelty of the technique. Malaysia’s booth was flogged once again with visitors when H.E. Ambassador’s wife, Datin Roslina demonstrated the techniques of painting batik motif. Many of them waited in line to try their hands on batik painting which is indeed a unique experience for the Ukrainians.
The OUTLOOK World Cultural Festival is one of the largest and most popular annual cultural events in the Ukrainian capital, providing a fun way for the locals to learn about the arts, music, food and traditions of other countries.
