H.E. Raja Dato’ Reza Raja Zaib Shah, Ambassador of Malaysia to Ukraine joined ambassadors and diplomats from 17 other countries in the biggest ever United Nations (UN) humanitarian mission to the regions of Luhansk and Donetsk, eastern of Ukraine on 5-7 November 2019. The special mission led by Ms. Osnat Lubrani, UN Resident Coordinator and Humanitarian Coordinator in Ukraine provided a very valuable opportunity for diplomats to learn and see first-hand the real situation on the ground, talk to the people who are affected by the conflict, witness humanitarian work carried out by the UN agencies and non-governmental organisations (NGOs) and interact with local authorities. Members of the mission among others visited the settlement in Stanytsia Luhanska, Maiorske’s entry-exit check point (EECP) and met with Serhiy Hayday, Governor of the Luhansk region. In Stanytsia Luhanska which is located close to the “contact line”, they visited a school, hospital and local community centre and engaged with the local residents. Thousands of people cross the 420 kilometer “contact line” from the non government-controlled area into the government-controlled area and vice versa through the five EECPs daily.
