The First Inter-Sessional Meeting of the Global Science and Innovation Advisory Council (GSIAC) was held in San Jose, California on 16 July 2012. It was co-chaired by Professor Emeritus Dato' Dr. Zakri Abdul Hamid (Science Adviser to YAB Prime Minister of Malaysia) and Mr. Ellis Rubinstein (President and Chief Executive Officer of the New York Academy of Sciences). The Consul General of Malaysia in Los Angeles, Mr. Nekmat Ismail was also in attendance. The meeting was held as part of the follow-up session to the Second GSIAC Meeting chaired by YAB Prime Minister of Malaysia held in New York on 16 May 2012.
GSIAC is a joint initiative between Malaysian Industry-Government Group for High Technology (MIGHT) and the New York Academy of Sciences (NYAS). It was initiated by YAB Prime Minister Dato' Sri Mohd Najib Tun Haji Abdul Razak to help Malaysia take the quantum leap from a middle-income country to a high-income generated economy by 2020. In addition, it will also enable Malaysia to become a centre for science and innovation and to also be a catalyst for transformation in the local science and innovation landscape.
