Reception to commemorate 50th Anniversary of Independence - New York

The Consulate hosted a reception to commemorate the 50th Anniversary of Malaysia's Independence on 08 September 2007 (Saturday) afternoon.

About 300 people comprising of Malaysian community and students who had looked forward to this momentous occasion thronged the Banquet Hall of the Consulate.  Most of the Malaysians have been residence of New York, Connecticut, Philadelphia for many long years and were visibly very excited to celebrate this golden jubilee of our independence.  If not for the space constraint, many more would have been invited. 

The modest yet meaningful reception began with a flag raising ceremony performed by a Malaysian student tuning to the national anthem.  This was followed later by a speech given by the Consul General. In his speech, the Consul General stressed to the Malaysian community to continue to uphold the good name of the country by way of respecting and adhering to the local law.  He also reminded them that as cultural Ambassador, they do have in their own right to exercise good deeds and spread the good words on Malaysia.  The guests were later treated to several sumptuous Malaysian cuisine prepared by the ladies of the Consulate.

Much to the admiration of the guests, a DVD presentation on Tuanku Abdul Rahman, Bapa Kemerdekaan as well as the speech made by YAB Perdana Menteri on the 50^th Merdeka celebration was shown throughout the reception.  Many who have not have the opportunity to celebrate Merdeka back at home found the DVD’s very impressive. Interestingly, there are also non-Malaysian guests who have high regard on Malaysia’s achievement and successful nation building process requested copies of the above DVDs.
