A group of Malaysian academicians from several Malaysian universities including from the University Putra Malaysia, the University Kebangsaan Malaysia and the Islamic Science University Malaysia visited Uzbekistan from 13th to 19th August 2013.

The main purpose of the visit to Uzbekistan was to attend an International Seminar on Mathematics and Natural Sciences which was held in the historical city of Samarkand from 14th to 17th August.

The trip to Uzbekistan was organized by the Malaysian Mathematics Society and included senior lecturers and professors and their family members whose number totalled 45 people.

While in Uzbekistan the delegation also paid a courtesy call on H.E. Ambassador Abdul Aziz Harun in his office on 14th August. During the meeting Ambassador Abdul Aziz briefed the delegation members on the educational system of Uzbekistan and the bilateral relations between Malaysia and Uzbekistan.

Before departing to Samarkand the group also visited the National University of Uzbekistan in Tashkent and met the rector and other senior academicians of the university.

During the trip to Samarkand the delegation visited many historical monuments including Imam Bukhari tomb in the Chelak village of the Samarkand province. Apart from Samarkand the delegation also visited the ancient city of Bukhara.

Throughout the visit Mr. Zainiddin Eshquvvatov, an Uzbek lecturer of mathematics at the University Putra Malaysia, acted as the main coordinator of the group. According to him, this is the second academic visit from Malaysia to Uzbekistan that he has been requested to coordinate. Similar academic visit was organized in spring 2011 for the members of the Historical Society of Malaysia.

Mr. Zainiddin himself is a bright example of the existing vibrant academic cooperation and exchange between Malaysia and Uzbekistan. For the last 8 years he and 3 other Uzbek lecturers have been working with the University Putra Malaysia as lecturers of different science disciplines. According to him, when he first arrived in Malaysia he spoke little English and no Bahasa Melayu but through his hard work and persistence he mastered both. Mr. Zainiddin thinks that Uzbek and Malaysian people share a lot of similarities.
