MALAYSIA – NEGARA BRUNEI DARUSSALAM COOPERATION ON COVID-19 RESPONSE
Earlier today, at 1400 hours, I had a telephone conversation with my Bruneian counterpart, Honorable Dato Seri Setia Haji Erywan bin Pehin Datu Pekerma Jaya Haji Mohd. Yusof, Minister of Foreign Affairs II of Negara Brunei Darussalam regarding the contribution by the Government of Brunei Darussalam worth RM1.7 million, consisting of ventilators and PCR COVID-19 test kits to Malaysia. The ventilators and test kits will be placed at government hospitals in the Federal Territory of Labuan, Sabah and Sarawak beginning July 2021.
On behalf of the Government of Malaysia, I have expressed my sincere gratitude to His Majesty the Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Negara Brunei Darussalam, and the Government of Brunei Darussalam for this invaluable contribution which will provide added value assistance to our healthcare system in Labuan, Sabah and Sarawak in managing the pandemic.
Malaysia is highly appreciative of Brunei’s continuous support in curbing the pandemic. With this contribution, I truly believe the existing special relations between the two countries will be further strengthened for the mutual benefit of our people.
Dato Erywan and I have also reiterated our commitment for Malaysia and Brunei to collaborate, continuously engage and assist each other, especially in the current situation amidst the pandemic.
Since the beginning of the pandemic, Brunei has been one of the first countries to collaborate with Malaysia in mitigating the adverse impacts of COVID-19. Among others, Malaysia and Brunei has had a series of successful COVID-19 collaborations particularly, in the repatriation of Malaysians and Bruneians in Cambodia, Egypt, India, Saudi Arabia and Sri Lanka as well as facilitating returns of citizens to Malaysia and Brunei.
Brunei's contribution showcases the close and special relations that have been established during the 37 years of diplomatic relations between the two countries. This also shows the high commitment of both countries as ASEAN Member States in addressing the COVID-19 crisis.
