ATTEMPTED TURKEY MILITARY COUP
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs confirms that since the attempted coup of Friday, 15 July 2016, the situation in Turkey, though still fluid, is now almost normalised. Reports indicate that all airports in Turkey have resumed operations.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has also mobilised a Special Task Force, comprising of officials from the Embassy of Malaysia in Ankara, the Malaysia External Trade Development Corporation (MATRADE), and Tourism Malaysia, assisted by the Honourary Consul of Malaysia in Istanbul to render assistance to Malaysians stranded at airports in Turkey.
The concerted effort of the Special Task Forece has enabled 32 Malaysians to safely arrive in Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA) this morning, 17 July 2016. Another 31 Malaysians stranded at Ataturk International Airport, Istanbul have also managed to secure tickets for their next destination and are expected to leave Istanbul today. For the remaining 158 Malaysians still stranded at Esenboga International Airport, Ankara, arrangements are being made to enable them to fly out to their next destination either by late today or tomorrow.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs will continue to monitor the situation and render assistance to Malaysians in need as a result of this incident.
