YB Dato’ Sri Anifah Haji Aman, Minister of Foreign Affairs, Malaysia, undertook a working visit to New York on 28 July 2016 to attend the United Nations Security Council Open Debate on “Peace Building in Africa”. The Ministerial-level meeting is part of the Council’s broader agenda relating to “Peace Building and Sustaining Peace”.
The first-ever Security Council Open Debate specifically focusing on peace building in Africa was presided over by H.E. Mr. Fumio Kishida, Minister for Foreign Affairs of Japan, as the Council President for the month of July 2016. Other Ministerial level representations at the Open Debate were from Angola, France, Senegal and the United States.
In his statement at the open debate, YB Minister of Foreign Affairs highlighted the need to place a strong emphasis on institution-building and national ownership towards a sustainable agenda. He emphasised Malaysia’s commitment to continue contributing to Africa’s peace and security, political stability, and economic growth, including through the Malaysian Technical Cooperation Programme (MTCP) and the Langkawi International Dialogue (LID).
As an outcome of the Open Debate, the Security Council adopted a Presidential Statement, underscoring the importance of institution-building as part of the long-term efforts of peace building and the role of regional and sub-regional organisations in sustaining peace in Africa.
YB Dato’ Sri Anifah also held a bilateral meeting with his Japanese counterpart to exchange views on regional issues of mutual concerns. In addition, YB Dato’ Sri Anifah also met with Ms. Helen Clark of New Zealand and Mr. Vuk Jeremi? of the Republic of Serbia, candidates for the post of the United Nations Secretary-General. As a Council member, Malaysia will take part in the selection of the next Secretary-General, to be decided later this year.
For the month of August 2016, Malaysia is poised to take over the Presidency of the UN Security Council from Japan. As a non-permanent member of the Security Council, Malaysia will continue to contribute constructively to the works of the Security Council in the maintenance of international peace and security.
