DUBAI, Feb 27 (Bernama) -- Fama Corporation Sdn Bhd (Famaco) has clinched a deal to supply Malaysian tropical fruits worth around RM800,000 to Spinneys, a leading supermarket chain in Dubai and across the Middle East.
The one-year contract was inked Thursday by Famaco export manager Ridzuan Mohamad Sirun and Spinneys Dubai LLC commercial manager Tinus Hendrikse in the presence of the Malaysian consul-general in Dubai, Syed Mohamad Hasrin Tengku Hussin.
Ridzuan told Bernama that the first consignment of Malaysian seedless watermelons would be delivered next week while the first shipment of mixed-fruits such as guava, dragon fruit, rose apple, star fruit, mango and papaya was expected to begin in the second week of March.
"We have been working on this since last year and they apparently like our samples, such as the seedless watermelon variety, and hence the agreement signed today," he said.
He said the watermelon and mixed-fruit shipments would be worth around RM300,000 and RM500,000 respectively.
"The fruits that we'll be supplying to Spinneys are non-seasonal. It's a matter of organising the production system back home," said Ridzuan.
According to him, Famaco, a wholly-owned subsidiary of Federal Agricultural Marketing Authority, an agency under the Agriculture and Agro-based Industry Ministry, had been supplying Malaysian fruits to countries in this part of the world including Jordan, Syria, Oman, Qatar and United Arab Emirates.
Meanwhile, Mohamad Hasrin expressed hope that the arrangement between Famaco and Spinneys would lead to other collaborations between both parties.
Spinneys Dubai LLC manager P. Mohamed Ali, who was present at the signing, hinted at the possibility of Spinneys organising "Malaysia Week" in the future to promote Malaysian products available at its outlets.
Also present were Malaysian agriculture consul in Dubai Abdul Razak Ahmad and Fama northern regional director Mohamad Ariffin Awang.
