TALK ON MALAYSIA FROM THE MALAYSIAN HIGH COMMISSION TO AUSTRALIA NATIONAL UNIVERSITY (ANU) INTERNATIONAL RELATIONS SOCIETY
On 4 May 2012, a group of 17 students from ANU International Relations Society visited the High Commission for a talk on Malaysia as part of the society annual programme for its members.
The students, who arrived at 4pm, was received by the YBhg. Dato’ Salman Ahmad, High Commissioner of Malaysia and senior officers from the High Commission at the Merdeka Hall.
The High Commission on its part has prepared and divided the talk about Malaysia into four topics and presented by four officers as follows;-
i. | Malaysia-Australia Bilateral Relations | - | Mr Eldeen Husaini Mohd. Hashim Deputy High Commissioner - Introduction on Malaysia; - Comparison between Malaysia and Australia geographically, socially, politically and economically; - Current bilateral relations between the countries through four element- G to G, Businesses, people and institutions; - Its impact on politic, economy and people in the two countries; and - Current issues- ongoing and outstanding. |
ii. | Malaysia-Australia Educational Cooperation | - | Mr Ruslin Jusoh Minister Counsellor - Long history and links in education- Colombo Plan, EMAS; - Ongoing educational collaborations- students, teachers, institutions; and - Present numbers of students and alumni |
iii. | Malaysia-Australia Defence Cooperation | - | Colonel Mohd. Hassan Loman Defence Advisor - History of cooperation and present relationship; - arrangements, exercises, bilateral talks, exchange programme/courses and visits; |
iv. | Malaysia-Australia Hub Products Cooperation | - | Dr. Sirajuddin Suhaimee First Secretary (Halal) - definition and background of cooperation; - major halal products from Australia; - list of approved abattoirs; - volume of red meat exported from 2010 and 2011; and - ongoing issues. |
YBhg. Dato’ Salman Ahmad chaired the talk and attended to the Q and A session. The students showed great interest in all topics with questions on the possibility of future collaborations between the two countries especially in the area of Islamic banking, tourism as well as a better and smoother bilateral relation.
The talk ended by 4.50pm and the students were entertained to Malaysian dishes prepared by the High Commission.
Comments
The talk is part of the High Commission reaching out activities and presented opportunity to directly engaging the local and international students. Through such engagement the High Commission is able to communicate on the Government policies, position and actions on certain areas. The students are also able to get first hand information on relevant issues. This also presented opportunity to build a good repo as well as better networking between the High Commission and the students. The High Commission looks forward to the next such activity in the future.
