Caracas, 9 April 2025 – As part of its ongoing public diplomacy efforts, the Embassy of Malaysia in Caracas organised an engagement session with students from the Faculty of International Relations at the Central University of Venezuela on 9 April 2025. The programme aimed to deepen the students’ understanding of Malaysia’s foreign policy, economic development, and its leadership role as Chair of ASEAN in 2025.
The Chargé d’Affaires led the session by introducing Malaysia’s geopolitical importance in Southeast Asia and its strategic position as a gateway to regional and global trade. He spoke about Malaysia’s rich cultural fabric, shaped by its multicultural and multireligious population, which has given rise to a society fluent in multiple languages, a diverse culinary scene, and a broad spectrum of traditional celebrations.
Students were given an overview of Malaysia’s economic transformation, tracing its development from an agriculture-based economy to a diversified, high-value economy anchored in sectors such as electronics, the digital economy, petrochemicals, and services. The discussion highlighted the country's ability to adapt to global economic trends while maintaining stability and inclusive growth.
The session also featured a detailed explanation of Malaysia’s foreign policy principles, which are rooted in respect for international law, mutual benefit, the peaceful resolution of disputes, and non-interference. Malaysia’s active participation in key multilateral forums such as the United Nations, ASEAN, the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC), and the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) was underscored as a reflection of the country’s commitment to regional and global engagement.
In discussing Malaysia’s Chairmanship of ASEAN in 2025, the Chargé d’Affaires outlined the nation’s strategic priorities, which include strengthening ASEAN centrality through sustained diplomacy and dialogue, enhancing intra-ASEAN trade and investment to foster inclusive and sustainable growth, and embedding sustainability and inclusiveness in ASEAN’s community-building efforts. The students expressed keen interest in Malaysia’s vision for ASEAN and posed thoughtful questions, reflecting their enthusiasm to learn more about the region’s diplomatic and economic landscape.
The session successfully served as a platform to connect with the next generation of Venezuelan international relations professionals while promoting greater awareness of Malaysia’s role on the global stage.
