A delegation from the Native Courts of Sarawak, led by Chief Registrar YBhg. Datu Michael Dawi Alli, made a Working Visit to Canberra and Melbourne from 10-13 December 2019. The objective of the visit was to study and gather information on the role and functions of the Australian legal system in terms of recognition and interest over the natives/indigenous culture, traditions and customary rights particularly over land. In addition, the visit was also to learn more about the management of indigenous courts within the Australian legal system, especially the Koori Courts.
During the visit to Canberra, the delegation had a meeting with the Attorney General’s Department and the Galambany Koori Court. They also had the opportunity to observe live proceedings at the special courts for the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander People, the Galambany Circle Court and the Warrumbul Circle Court. The delegation departed for Melbourne on 11 December 2019 and had a meeting with the Department of Justice of Victoria.
