MELBOURNE, Sept 2 (Bernama) -- About 30 Australian veterans who fought during the Japanese Occupation and the Indonesia-Malaysia Confrontation attended a memorial service at the Shrine of Remembrance here Friday.
They were there to remember their comrades who sacrificed their lives in the defence of Malaya and Malaysia.
Malaysia's consul-general here Dr Mohd Rameez Yahaya, who attended the ceremony, said it was a touching moment when the Australian veterans paid tribute to their war dead.
"It was all the more significant because the ceremony at the Shrine coincided with our Merdeka Day (independence) anniversary," Dr Rameez said.
He laid a wreath on behalf of Malaysia during the ceremony.
Malayan and Borneo Veterans' Association national patron Major General J C Hughes was the guest speaker.
Also present were Australia's Federal Minister for Veteran Affairs Warren Snowdown and Senator Michael Ronaldson.
