MELBOURNE : The Australian-Malaysian Business Council, (AMBC) Victoria chapter, is including students in its membership to groom them for future leadership roles in the business community.
AMBC also plans to have a Merdeka Day Student of the Year award to promote academic excellence and acknowledge hard work.
This was announced by AMBC Victoria president Joe Perri at a gala dinner here on Tuesday to mark the 56th anniversary of Malaysia's independence.
"I have had the privilege of addressing Malaysian students, and I have to say how impressed I am with Malaysia's youth," Perri said.
"They are genuinely focused and determined to see that their country and its people enjoy a prosperous future."
Perri said as a business group AMBC had a role to play to engage young people who would soon be Malaysia's captains of industry and professional leaders.
The Malaysian Consul General to Victoria Datuk Dr Mohd Rameez Yahaya outlined the history of Malaysia since independence, saying Malaysia had served well by its outstanding leaders.
Also present at the dinner were Victorian state Members of Parliament Michael Gidling (Liberal Party) and Hock Lim (Labor); Melbourne City Councillor Ken Ong, Malaysia Investment and
Development Authority Sydney-based Commissioner Aizah Abdullah, Malaysia Airlines Manager here Terence Swampillai and Matrade Commissioner Shaiful Sharif.
AMBC Victoria committee for 2013-14 comprises Mike Anderson, Juris Austrums, James Fabris, Trevor Haines, Andy Lau, Siew Ling Lian, Peter Moran, Perri (President) and Felix Wong. -- BERNAMA
