MELBOURNE, Sept 3 (Bernama) -- About 40 former students of La Salle Brothers schools in Malaysia attended a get-together to celebrate the 55th Merdeka anniversary and to mark 160 years of La Salle education in Malaysia.
Hosted by SP Setia Melbourne Chief Executive Choong Kai Wai, a former St Michael's Ipoh student, the attendees included the Malaysian Consul General Dr Mohd Rameez Yahaya, Malaysia Airlines manager here Terence Swampillai, Prof Alfredo Gomes (St John's Bukit Nanas), lawyer Chuen Lim (St Anthony's Teluk Anson) and restaurateur Robert Teoh (St Michael's, Ipoh).
In his welcoming speech, Lim said a distinguishing factor of La Salle education was "the community spirit that it engenders - the spirit of belonging to a community with shared goals and interest".
"We are here to recognise the education we have benefited from the La Sallian mission and to honour the dedication of teaching brothers and sisters (nuns) and the lay teachers," Lim said.
"In return, La Salle schools have produced some of the best doctors, teachers, political leaders, journalists, business leaders, judges, engineers, lawyers, technicians - indeed every profession and trade you can envisage," he said.
