Malaysian Envoy In Melbourne Surprises Consulate Visitors
MELBOURNE, Oct 3 (Bernama) -- Visitors to the Malaysian Consulate here on Tuesday were pleasantly surprised to be greeted at the door by the Consul General, Dr Mohd Rameez Yahaya.
They were also surprised to be treated to mee goreng and teh tarik, prepared by the Malaysia Hall caterer Aznil.
"I wanted to make them all welcome and get suggestions to improve our consulate services," Rameez said.
"We have been rather busy since opening the Consulate in April last year with a variety of services including the issuing or renewing of passports, providing marriage and birth certificates, visas, good behavior letters and attending to problems encountered by students and Malaysian expats," he said.
On any one day, there could be more than 60 people and families seeking consular assistance.
In the past they had to travel to Canberra for the travel and other needs which were expensive especially if children were included.
"But they now come from South Australia, Tasmania, New South Wales and even the Gold Coast. I suppose Melbourne has more attractions, activities and amenities, including good shopping centres and restaurants," Rameez said.
"We also see to the needs of our students here. Melbourne has about 10,000 Malaysian students, the largest number in any city in the world and they find our consulate very handy."
The Consul General said that Australian business people often dropped in to make inquiries about trade and investment opportunities in Malaysia.
The Consulate is spacious enough to hold meetings when Government ministers and other VIPs visit Melbourne, especially to meet students.
