MELBOURNE, July 7 (Bernama) -- Malaysian Consul-General Datuk Dr Mohd Rameez Yahaya was treated to a special afternoon tea on Saturday, by Malaysian La Sallians to celebrate his recent datukship from the Sultan of Pahang, and the Darjah Seri Sirajuddin Perlis (SSP) from Perlis.
He received the honours within 10 days of each other in May.
Rameez, 44, who was accompanied by his Sarawakian wife, Noor Zulaikha Nangaie, said he was humbled by the honours bestowed upon him by the Malaysian royal houses.
"I am blessed by the wonderful support I get from my staff and the Malaysian community here. I've been made most welcome and for this, I'm most grateful," he said.
"There are about 70,000 Malaysians in Melbourne, as well as about 9,000 Malaysian students, and I hope to serve them well," he said, praising the Malaysian La Sallians here who were active in raising money for the education of poor children in Myanmar.
Organised by lawyers Lim Chuen, formerly of Teluk Intan (Perak) and Raj Thanarajah of Taiping (Perak), the evening was attended by about 40 La Sallians and officials from the Australian Malaysian Business Council (AMBC).
Lim said Rameez had been a great representative of Malaysia since his arrival here more than two years ago.
AMBC Victoria president Joe Perri said Rameez was a great help in promoting bilateral trade.
"He has opened many doors to Australian business people and takes an active part in AMBC initiatives," he said.
