The Malaysian Welcoming BBQ is an event held each year to welcome Malaysians from all over the State of Victoria, either those studying or working to get to know, meet and engage with each other. This year, the event was jointly organised by Kelab Umno Australia Melbourne (KUAM), Vision Malaysia, Malay Education and Cultural Centre Australia (MECCA), and Badan Hal Ehwal dan Pembangunan Islam (IHSAN) with the assistance from the Office of the Consulate General Malaysia, Melbourne. It was held at the Flagstaff Gardens (Corner of LaTrobe and Williams Street, CBD) on Saturday, 10 March 2012.
The three hours event which commenced from 1pm ended at 4pm in the evening. Other than the officiating ceremony by Dr Rameez, the event also saw registration by Malaysians with KUAM and Consulate General, the postal voting registration for full time Malaysian students of over 21 years old, the Silat Cekak Ustaz Hanafi Australia demonstration, teh tarik challenge, galah panjang and other games. Dr Rameez spoke of the need for such an event to be held every year as to ensure that Malaysians alike can get to know each other better. He also congratulated participating organisers of the event. More than 400 Malaysians attended the event, and they were served with BBQ Chicken Wings and Sausages. TAHNIAH!
