MELBOURNE: Raja of Perlis, Tuanku Syed Sirajuddin Putra Jamalullail and his consort Tuanku Tengku Fauziah Tengku Abdul Rashid joined some 400 Malaysian students and expatriates to celebrate Hari Raya Haji with prayers and breakfast.

The event, which was held at the Malaysian Consulate here yesterday, was also attended by Raja Muda of Perlis, Tuanku Syed Faizuddin Putra Jamalullail and Raja Puan Muda of Perlis, Tuanku Lailatul Shahreen Akashah.

Among others were Speaker of the Victorian State Legislative Council Bruce Aitkinson, Melbourne City Councillor Ken Ong and the Australia-Malaysia Business Council, Victoria president Joe Perri.

At the gathering, Tuanku Syed Faizuddin reminded that Adil Adha celebration was a way for Muslims worldwide to understand and emphasise on the spirit of  sacrificing, as well as to move forward.

“During this celebration, we normally sacrifice our money for the slaughtering of cows, sheeps and camels, that is to emulate the same sacrifice made by of one of our prophets, Abraham,” he said.

The royalty also spent some time with students and attended a dinner hosted by consul-general Dr Datuk Mohd Rameez Yahaya and his wife Datin Noor Zulaika Nangaie in the exclusive suburb of Camberwell here.

At the dinner, Tuanku Syed Sirajuddin advised Malaysian students to comply to the Australian rules and regulations and reminded them to stay away from trouble.

He also urged students to study well and achieve qualifications in order to return and contribute to Malaysia’s nation-building. — Bernama
