TRAVEL ADVISORY FOR THE REPUBLIC OF AUSTRIA
Current Situation
Given the current COVID-19 situation, the Federal Government announced a full temporary lockdown in Austria from 22 November until probably 13 December 2021. In general, below are the latest developments:
- 13,806 new infections were recorded in the last 24 hours, with 27 cases COVID-19 related deaths. Highest infections were recorded in Upper Austria (3,285), Lower Austria (3,233) and Styria (1,392).
- Infections reached record high on 19 November, with 15,809 daily new cases. The 7-day incidence rate of new cases in Austria is currently 1,110.2 cases per 100,000 inhabitants, which is among the highest in Europe.
- About 90% of new infections are caused by the mutated B.1.617.2 strain (Delta variant), leading to rapid increase in new infections.
- The COVID-19 vaccination rate in Austria is currently at 66.01% of the population. 69.76% of the population is vaccinated at least with the first dose.
Full lockdown for all population is currently enforced in Austria from Monday, 22 November until probably 13 December 2021, at the latest. Individuals are not allowed to leave home except to attend school or work, essential shopping and health reasons.
After the end of the current lockdown, the 2-G-rule (proof of full vaccination/past infection) will be in effect again in Austria, as well as FFP2 mask requirements in many areas.
Entry Requirements to Austria
Entry for business, education, transit and other specific purposes are permissible.
Entry for touristic purposes to Austria is currently prohibited.
Travellers from Malaysia with valid purpose(s) are required to show any one of these three documents:
- valid COVID-19 vaccination certificate;
- proof of past infection (recovery certificate); or
- negative result of valid PCR test. (Pre-Travel Registration and 10 days mandatory self-quarantine are required)

Recommendation
Given the increasingly worsening COVID-19 situation in Austria, the Embassy of Malaysia would like to strongly recommend Malaysian citizens:
- To avoid undertaking, if possible, or to postpone non-essential travel to Austria, at least until the early part of the First Quarter of 2022.
- In the event travelling to Austria is essential, Malaysian travellers are strongly advised to secure, prior to their departure, sufficient travel and medical insurance coverage for any eventuality, including COVID-19 infections and subsequent treatment and/or hospitalization; and flight rescheduling or cancellation; as well as sufficient funds for extended stay.
