27 September 2011 1 views

At the invitation of the Main Imam of the Majlis Islamic Community of Sarajevo, the Embassy of Malaysia in Bosnia and Herzegovina was invited to attend the opening of the new Jemat Nahorevo Mosque on 25 September 2011.  The Embassy was represented by Mr. Mohd Hussain Bakar, Charge d'Affaires a.i.  The mosque is located in the Nahorevo locality of Sarajevo.

The Jemat Nahorevo old mosque was destroyed during the 1992-1995 war in Bosnia and Herzegovina.  Work on the construction of the  new mosque began several years ago following contributions by the Municipality Centre of Sarajevo, the Government of Malaysia, voluntary organisations and residents of the Nahorevo locality.  The contribution from the Government of Malaysia was handed over to the Jemat Nahorevo Mosque Committee in 2004 by H.E. Datuk Zakaria Sulong who was then Ambassador of Malaysia to Bosnia and Herzegovina.

The opening ceremony was officiated by Mr. Muharem Omerdic, Chief of Religious Education Service of the Majlis Islamic Community of Bosnia and Herzegovina.  He attended the event as a representative of the Grand Mufti of Bosnia and Herzegovina.  In his speech, Mr. Omerdic thanked all parties, including the Malaysian Government, for their contributions towards the construction of the new mosque.
