2nd Malaysia-Brunei Joint Working Group Meeting on Education

Wednesday, December 31, 2008 BRUNEI and Malaysia continue to collaborate in the field of education by exchanging knowledge and information during the 2nd Joint Working Group Meeting yesterday. Held at the Rizqun International Hotel, the nine delegates from Malaysia were headed by Tan Sri Dr Hj Zulkarnain Hj Awang, the Secretary General of the Ministry of Education of Malaysia, Brunei representatives were led by Hj Mohd Daud Hj Mahmud, the permanent secretary (Higher education) of the Ministry of Education. The permanent secretary in his remarks spoke of the strategy plans initiated by the ministry and their mission to promote holistic education in line with the impending National Educational System of the 21st century (SPN21) which will be implemented in January 2009. He also touched on the nation's "Wawasan 2035", where they hope to be able to produce highly educated individuals whose skills will be up to par with the global standard. Tan Sri Dr Hj Zulkarnain expressed hopes that the meeting would provide a platform for planning and developing more programmes and activities for both countries. He added that through it they could also share experiences and issues that they encounter such as teaching mathematics and science in which the secretary general said would help them very much. "I hope we are able to work together in this initiative and to identify new areas of cooperation," he said. The meeting also highlighted its important role in the implementation of the SPN21 and keeping each other updated on the recent development of education in both countries in terms of the Higher Education Prospect, the teaching and learning of the English Language programme that is designed for children in pre-schools as well as Jawi, Al-Quran, Arabic language and Fardhu Ain (J-Qaf). The Joint Working Group meeting was based on an incentive of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) that was signed by both countries in February 1992. The first joint work meet was held in Kota Kinabalu. Also attending the closed-door meeting was Dr Ramli Hassan, deputy secretary general Ministry of Higher Education in Malaysia, Vice-Chancellor Universiti Brunei Darussalam, Hj Zulkarnain Hj Hanafi, Dato' Ku Jaafar Ku Shaari, the hight commissioner of Malaysia as well as senior officials from both ministries. Last night the Malaysian delegates were fete to a dinner at Port View Restaurant in the country's capital. The delegates, who arrived on Monday, will be leaving Brunei today. Heading the Bruneian delegation was the Education Ministry's Permanent Secretary (Higher Education) Awg Hj Daud Hj Mahmud, whilst his Malaysian counterpart was headed by the Secretary-General of the Malaysia Education Ministry, Tan Sri Dr Hj Zulkurnain Hj Awang. In light of the current implementation of the SPN21 that will begin its implementation stage early next year, both delegations also shared on the recent development of education in both countries, the prospect of higher education, the Teaching and Learning in English Language Programme that is the English Language programme for Pre-Schools (EPPS) and Jawi, Al-Quran, Arabic and Fardu-Ain programmes. With its main objective of further promoting the exchanges in the field of education, the meeting also aimed to consolidate and strengthen the educational exchanges and cooperation between both countries, which were based on the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding on February 14, 1992. Negara Brunei Darussalam dan Malaysia berkongsi maklumat terkini meliputi prospek Pendidikan Tinggi, Program Pengajaran dan Pembelajaran dalam Bahasa Inggeris bagi sekolah-sekolah pra yang telah dijalankan di negara ini dan persetujui dalam Mesyuarat Kumpulan Kerja Bersama hari ini. Selain itu program Jawi, Al-Qur'an, Bahasa Arab serta Fardu Ain juga dibincangkan dalam mesyuarat kali kedua di antara Kementerian Pendidikan Negara Brunei Darussalam dan Kementerian Pelajaran Malaysia yang berlangsung di sebuah hotel antarabangsa di sini. Dalam mesyuarat tersebut, delegasi kedua buah negara membincangkan dan bersetuju bagi beberapa aktiviti dan program dijalankan untuk merealisasikan objektif dan bidang kerjasama dalam pendidikan yang dijalin melalui Kumpulan Kerja Bersama itu. Bagi Negara Brunei Darussalam, ia sememangnya signifikan dengan hasrat Kementerian Pendidikan ke arah mengimplementasikan Sistem Pendidikan Negara Abad Ke-21 (SPN-21) yang akan dimulakan peringkat awal pada tahun 2009. Setiausaha Tetap (Pengajian Tinggi) Kementerian Pendidikan, Awang Haji Mohd. Daud bin Haji Mahmud mengetaui delegasi Negara Brunei Darussalam manakala Kementerian Pelajaran Malaysia diketuai oleh Ketua Setiausahanya, Yang Berbahagia Tan Sri Dr. Haji Zulkurnain bin Haji Awang. Mesyuarat tahunan yang dikendalikan oleh kedua buah kementerian secara bergilir itu bertujuan untuk mengukuhkan lagi jalinan kerjasama di antara kedua buah negara terutama dalam mempromosikan pertukaran maklumat dan aktiviti dalam bidang pendidikan berasaskan kepada Memorandum Persefahaman yang telah ditandatangani oleh kedua buah kementerian pada 14 Februari 1992. Antara yang hadir di mesyuarat tersebut termasuklah Timbalan Ketua Setiausaha, Kementerian Pengajian Tinggi Malaysia, Dr. Ramli bin Hasan, Naib Canselor Universiti Brunei Darussalam, Dr. Haji Zulkarnain bin Haji Hanafi, Pesuruhjaya Tinggi Malaysia ke negara ini, Tuan Yang Terutama Dato? Ku Jaafar bin Ku Shaari serta pegawai-pegawai kanan kedua buah kementerian. |
