On 29 October 2023, the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sports of Brunei Darussalam organised the ASEAN Sports Day 2023 at Taman Haji Sir Muda Omar ‘Ali Saifuddien in Bandar Seri Begawan. The Minister of Development Dato Seri Setia Awang Haji Muhammad Juanda bin Haji Abdul Rashid in his capacity as the Acting Minister of Culture, Youth and Sports was the guest of honour for the event.
Among sporting activities held during the day include, walkathon, tug of war, netball, sepak takraw, archery and traditional games such as ‘congkak’ and ‘pasang’. The event kicked off with walkathon around Bandar Seri Begawan covering the distance over 3km led by the guest of honour. Over 500 people attended the event comprising of ASEAN Heads of Mission as well as their staff, citizens of ASEAN countries residing in Brunei and the local communities.
Raising ASEAN awareness through sporting activities and bringing ASEAN communities together have continued to be the common priorities for all ASEAN Member States. The High Commission of Malaysia sees the event as the perfect avenue to not only raise awareness of ASEAN, but also to promote mutual respect and understanding among the communities of ASEAN.
