The establishment of the alumni chapter is a significant milestone in the university's mission to maintain its relations with alumni members and expand its international networks as well as to provide an ongoing service to its former graduates, said the vice-chancellor.
The chapter is a formally organised association of alumni wishing to network with other alumni in different geographical locations for professional, intellectual, business and other special interest purposes.
Among the objectives set for the establishment of a chapter is to provide opportunities for active participation in the development of the university, increase visibility for the university in different geographical, professional and social arenas and to unite alumni in an organisation that mutually benefits the members as well as the university.
The establishment of the alumni chapter will also be able to serve as a forum for communication between the university and its alumni.
The University of Malaya - Brunei Chapter has over 100 local members both still serving and retired from high level positions within the government as well as the private sector. Among the alumni members still serving with the government are three senior ministers, including the Minister of Education.
Present during the launching ceremony as guest of honour along with alumni members both local and foreign who are working in the country was the Minister of Education, Pehin Orang Kaya Seri Lela Dato Seri Setia (Dr) Hj Abd Rahman Dato Setia Hj Mohamed Taib.
The ceremony began with a reading of the Surah Al-Fatihah followed by a thanksgiving doa and opening address by the High Commissioner of Malaysia to Brunei cum chairman of the Protem Committee, Dato' Ku Jaafar Ku Shaari.
The chapter plaque was then presented to the Minister of Education by the chairman of the University of Malaya Board of Directors, Tan Sri Datok Arshad Ayub followed by the official introduction of the chapter to the alumni members.
A briefing on the alumni functions was then presented by Professor Datin Dr Jamaliah Mohd Ali, fellow senior researcher at the Department of Alumni Relations, University of Malaya to conclude the ceremony. (SRH1)

UM alumni open Brunei chapter
11 June 2009 - The Brunei Chapter of the Universiti Malaya (UM) Alumni was officially launched yesterday in a bid to foster closer relationships with other alumni across the region in various fields.
The guest of honour at the launch held at the Jerudong Royal Polo & Riding Club was YB Pehin Orang Kaya Seri Lela Dato' Seri Setia Awg Hj Abdul Rahman, Minister of Education.
Also present was Minister of Culture, Youth and Sports, YB Pehin Orang Kaya Setia Pahlawan Dato Seri Setia Dr Hj Awg Ahmad bin Jumat, Deputy Minister of Education, Pg Dato Seri Setia Dr Hj Mohammad Pg Hj Abdul Rahman and senior government officers and graduates from Universiti Malaya.
H.E Dato' Ku Jaafar Ku Shaari, High Commissioner of Malaysia to Brunei Darussalam, was the chairperson of the event. Among the highlights of the event was the presentation of the UM Alumni Brunei Chapter plaque by Tan Sri Arshad Ayub, Chairman of the UM Board of Directors to the guest of honour.
