On 12 June 2025, the High Commissioner of Malaysia HE Datuk Mohd Aini Atan received a courtesy call by delegation from the Centre of Regional Strategic Studies (CROSS), an independent Malaysian think tank, led by Professor Dr Wong Chin Yoon.
During the call, Dr Wong apprised HE Datuk Mohd Aini of CROSS’ current initiative in conducting a comprehensive preliminary study to gauge the feasibility of the potential development of a Special Economic Zone (SEZ) between Brunei and Sarawak, which to be modelled after the Johor-Singapore SEZ.
Both sides had frank exchanges of thoughts and views on the challenges and way forward in pursuing the development of the SEZ. HE Datuk Mohd Aini underscored that the proposal for the establishment of SEZ is an astute idea which in turn could be an economic catalyst in enhancing bilateral trade and strengthening economic connectivity between both countries.
HE Datuk Mohd Aini further underlined that the prospect of establishing a Brunei – Sarawak SEZ holds significant economic potential for both countries that would drive socio-economic developments and contribute to the prosperity of the peoples of both nations.
