THE Malaysian High Commission yesterday celebrated the 80th anniversary of the Malaysian Armed Forces (MAF) with a reception at the Rizqun International Hotel.
Reflecting over its long history since the early 20th century, the Acting Malaysian High Commissioner to Brunei said in her speech that the MAF has not wavered in its main role of defending the sovereignty and strategic interests of Malaysia.
Maznah Mohd Hashim also pointed out the expanding role of the MAF in managing natural disasters and international peacekeeping operations among others.
She recalled the role of the MAF in fighting against insurgency during the emergency period of Malaysia, where they fought along with the Commonwealth Armed Forces, who assisted them in facing the challenges during the early formation of Malaysia in 1963.
"Many of them lost their lives in the course of defending the formation of our nation," said Maznah, adding that security personnel continue to sacrifice their lives today.
The Acting Malaysian High Commissioner was referring to the security personnel killed during a recent conflict in Lahad Datu, Sabah, while defending Malaysian sovereignty and national security against militants.
Malaysia, she stated, is always committed towards strengthening its close relations with Brunei indefence cooperation, including military training, exercises and intelligence.
Among the examples of defence cooperation she listed were the participation of the Royal Brunei Armed Forces (RBAF) with the MAF in peacekeeping missions in Lebanon as well as Mindanao, Philippines.
She noted the attendance of the RBAF Commander at the reception signified the longstanding commitment of both armed forces towards greater cooperation.
Present alongside Major General Dato Paduka Seri Hj Aminuddin Ihsan Pehin Orang Kaya Saiful Mulok DatoSeri Paduka Hj Abidin was the Malaysian Defence Attache to Brunei, Colonel Hj Reduan Hj Omar.
