MALAYSIA TO SERVE AS NON-PERMANENT MEMBER IN GCC

KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia will serve as non-permanent member of the political and economic union of Arab states, Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) Security Council for the period 2015-2016.

The Kuwait Ambassador to Malaysia, Saad Abdullah Al Asousi said the support was announced by the Mission of the State of Kuwait to the United Nations on behalf of the GCC during the monthly meeting of the Asian Group recently.

"May Malaysia succeed in this quest and I express the confidence of those countries that the nomination will strengthen, with no doubt the efforts of the Security Council in the carrying out its main mission of keeping international peace and security," he said in a statement, here today.

The statement said, Malaysia will take the place of South Korea as GCC Security Council non-permanent member, whose term of office expires at the end of this year.

GCC is a political and economic union of Arab states bordering the Persian Gulf, namely Bahrain, Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, United Arab Emirates and the State of Kuwait which is the current head of the session.-- BERNAMA
