Working Visit of YB Dato’ Sri Minister in the Prime Minister's Office (Law and Institutional Reform)

The High Commission of Malaysia facilitated and joined YB Dato’ Sri Azalina Othman Said, Minister in the Prime Minister's Office (Law and Institutional Reform) and delegation in conducting a study in Ottawa, Canada from 6 to 9 May 2024, to deepen the concept of the separation of powers of the Attorney General and the Public Prosecutor. Her delegation comprised members of Parliament, senior officials from the Legal Affairs Division (BHEUU) and the Attorney General's Chambers as well as the President of the Malaysian Bar Council.
The study visit involved a series of meetings with The Honourable Arif Virani, Minister of Justice and Attorney General of Canada; The Honourable Greg Fergus, Speaker of the House of Commons of Canada; The Honourable Doug Downey, Attorney General of Ontario; The Honourable James Maloney, Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of Justice and Attorney General; Her Excellency Nancy Othmer, Assistant Deputy Minister Public Law and Legislative Service Sector; Ms. Kathleen Roussel, Director of Public Prosecutions and Deputy Attorney General of Canada and Ms. Isabelle Dapoust, Deputy CEO of Canadian Bar Association.
The Malaysian delegation also had a constructive roundtable discussion with academic experts from the Faculty of Law of the Universiti Malaya and the University of Ottawa as well as representatives of civil society organisations and non-governmental organisations (NGOs).
