Reception in Conjunction with Malaysia’s Bid for the ITU Council Membership for the Term 2023 – 2026
On 29 March 2022, Malaysia hosted a reception in conjunction with its bid to the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) Council Membership for the term 2023 – 2026. The reception was hosted by TYT Dato’ Dr. Ahmad Faisal Muhamad, Permanent Representative of Malaysia to the United Nations (UN) and other International Organisations at Geneva.
At the reception, Dato’ Dr. Ahmad Faisal interacted and exchanged views on the priorities and pledges of Malaysia’s bid to the ITU Council. Dato’ Dr. Ahmad Faisal also expressed confidence that Malaysia can contribute meaningfully through the Council’s membership, towards ensuring an effective and forward-looking ITU, with fit-for-purpose strategies and action plans.
The reception was held over a coffee break during the ITU Council session 2022 held in ITU Headquarters in Geneva. Guests comprising UN delegates were feted to a variety of Malaysian traditional delicacies or ‘kueh’, and gifted with Malaysian crafts made from batik. They also had the opportunity to sample Malaysian coffee.
The ITU is a specialised agency of the UN responsible for all matters related to information and communication technologies. It was established on 17 May 1865, making it the oldest UN agency.
Malaysia has been a member of ITU since 1958 and throughout its membership, Malaysia has continued to play an active role and committed to the goals of the Union. Among others, Malaysia had previously served as a Council member from 1998 to 2014 and had been actively involved in the ITU Radio Regulations Board (RRB) as Chair and Vice-Chair. Malaysia is ranked 5th globally in the ITU’s Global Cybersecurity Index 2021 and is 2nd at the regional level.
